Who pays most per tonne for Chinese tea
Among China's ten largest tea markets in 2025, Malaysia paid by far the most per tonne — about USD 21,175.5, on just 4,007.6 tonnes. The United States and Japan followed at about USD 6,347.6 and USD 5,725.4. The West African markets sat close together, from about USD 4,004.9 for Ghana to about USD 4,258.4 for Côte d'Ivoire, with Senegal at USD 4,024.6. Morocco paid USD 3,043.4 and Uzbekistan the least, about USD 2,105.9, against China's all-destination average of USD 3,691.2.

How this list was built
Senegal's, Morocco's and the national figures are unit prices published by the China Chamber of Commerce of Foodstuffs and Native Produce (CCCFNA) for January–December 2025. The others, marked ≈, are calculated on this page by dividing each destination's export value by its volume in Table 6 of the chamber's December 2025 report. They are averages across every grade and contract shipped, not prices for any lot. Fujian's category prices — near USD 10,600 per tonne for oolong in 2023 — are provincial and not on the same basis.

Why does Morocco pay less than the average?
The statistics show the gap, not its cause. Part of it is category mix: 99.85% of Morocco's tea from China is green tea, and green tea averaged USD 3,368.2 per tonne in China's 2025 exports against USD 5,258.0 for black tea and USD 6,981.9 for specialty teas. Grade mix and contract terms within green tea also move the average.
Is Senegal the highest-paying market in West Africa?
No. Senegal's published USD 4,024.6 per tonne is above Morocco's USD 3,043.4, but value divided by volume puts Côte d'Ivoire at about USD 4,258.4 and Mauritania at about USD 4,136.9 in 2025. Ghana, at about USD 4,004.9, paid almost the same as Senegal.
