Fuzhou is the reference origin for scented tea; the contract states the scenting rounds, the base grade and whether blossom stays in the finished tea.

Tea knowledge

How does it taste, and what can it realistically do?

Jasmine changes aroma dramatically, but the base tea still determines much of the chemistry and caffeine. Separate sensory pleasure from medical claims.

How is jasmine tea graded?

Jasmine tea is graded by how many times the base tea is scented with fresh jasmine blossom — the scenting round, or yin. Fuzhou is the reference origin: Fujian ranks first in China for scented tea exports, and Fuzhou jasmine tea alone exports roughly 1,500 tonnes a year for about USD 13 million. Scenting rounds, base tea grade and whether blossom is left in the finished tea are the three things a contract must state.

Origin: Fuzhou, Fujian. The producing party is named in the quotation.

What are the grades?

Jasmine Tea is offered in 4 grades. The grade fixes the make; the contract fixes moisture, residue standard, screen and packing. Quoting a grade code without those four clauses leaves the price-relevant variables undefined.

What does the specification cover?

The figures below are the trade specification ranges ODM Tea quotes against for jasmine tea under HS 0902.20, not a per-lot guarantee. Where a certificate of analysis is part of the contract, the specification for a shipment is issued with it; where testing is included in the quotation, the residue report is tested against the destination standard rather than the origin standard.

How is jasmine tea graded?

Jasmine tea is graded by how many times the base tea is scented with fresh jasmine blossom — the scenting round, or yin. What moisture specification applies to jasmine tea?

≤ 8.5% (scented tea). Moisture is one of the main factors in how long tea keeps, alongside the pack and storage, and it is the first line on a certificate of analysis.

Which HS heading does jasmine tea ship under?

0902.20. Heading 0902 splits tea by fermentation and by packing size: immediate packings of 3 kg or less move green and white tea to 0902.10, and oolong and black tea to 0902.30.

Which markets buy jasmine tea?

Russia, Morocco, United States. Chinese tea volume into Russia fell 19.2% to 15.9 million kg year-to-date, with the mix at 68% green and 14% specialty.

What sets the price of jasmine tea?

The base tea — buds and young leaves cost more — the number of scenting rounds, each needing fresh blossom and a night's work, whether the leaf is hand-rolled into pearls, and the season of the flowers, with summer blossom prized for scenting. A comparable quotation names all four.

Why is jasmine tea associated with Okinawa?

Okinawa's jasmine tea, sanpin-cha, is usually traced to the Ryukyu Kingdom's long trade with China through Fuzhou, the jasmine-tea capital; the name comes from the Chinese xiangpian, scented leaf. It is still widely drunk there.
