Tea knowledge

How does it taste, and what can it realistically do?

Fresh, grassy, chestnut-like or marine: green tea has a wide flavour range. Its health story needs more nuance than a detox headline.

Does Fujian produce green tea worth exporting?

Fujian ranks third in China for green tea exports, behind Zhejiang and Anhui. In 2023 green tea was 11,700 tonnes and USD 103 million of Fujian's export book — 40.48% of provincial volume and 33.72% of value, working out near USD 8,800 per tonne against a national all-tea average of USD 3,691.2 per tonne in 2025.

Origin: Ningde, Quanzhou and Fuzhou, Fujian. The producing party is named in the quotation.

What are the grades?

Green Tea is offered in 4 grades. The grade fixes the make; the contract fixes moisture, residue standard, screen and packing. Quoting a grade code without those four clauses leaves the price-relevant variables undefined.

Where a certificate of analysis is part of the contract, the specification for a shipment is issued with it; where testing is included in the quotation, the residue report is tested against the destination standard rather than the origin standard.

Frequently asked

Does Fujian produce green tea worth exporting?

Fujian ranks third in China for green tea exports, behind Zhejiang and Anhui. In 2023 green tea was 11,700 tonnes and USD 103 million of Fujian's export book — 40.48% of provincial volume and 33.72% of value, working out near USD 8,800 per tonne against a national all-tea average of USD 3,691.2 per tonne in 2025.

What moisture specification applies to green tea?

≤ 7.0% (GB/T green tea trade spec). Moisture is one of the main factors in how long tea keeps, alongside the pack and storage, and it is the first line on a certificate of analysis.

Which HS heading does green tea ship under?

0902.20. Heading 0902 splits tea by fermentation and by packing size: immediate packings of 3 kg or less move green and white tea to 0902.10, and oolong and black tea to 0902.30.

Which markets buy green tea?

Russia, Uzbekistan, Japan, United States. Chinese tea volume into Russia fell 19.2% to 15.9 million kg year-to-date, with the mix at 68% green and 14% specialty.

What is Chinese green tea?

Tea from the tea plant that is heated soon after picking — pan-fired, baked or steamed — to stop oxidation, then shaped and dried, so it keeps its green colour and fresh taste. It is China's largest tea category and 88.11% of its tea export volume in 2025. Styles range from Longjing and Biluochun to the export grades gunpowder and Chunmee.

How do you choose a green tea?

Start from how it will be drunk: whole-leaf pan-fired teas for drinking plain, gunpowder or Chunmee for strong, sweetened mint tea, tea-bag cuts for convenience. Check the season, the colour and evenness of the leaf, then cup it — a good green tea tastes fresh and clean, not flat, smoky or stale. A buyer's contract names the grade or origin, the season and the residue standard.

Which green tea is best for breakfast?

A fuller green tea stands up better to breakfast food: pan-fired Chinese greens and gunpowder are stronger and toastier than a delicate early-spring tea. Brew it a little lighter than you would black tea — cooler water and a shorter steep keep it from turning bitter.

What does green tea look like?

It depends on the style: flat, sword-shaped leaves for Longjing, tight spirals for Biluochun, rolled pellets for gunpowder, curved eyebrow strips for Chunmee. Dry leaf runs from jade to dark olive; brewed, the liquor is pale yellow-green. Colour alone does not grade a green tea.

Why is green tea expensive?

Early-spring green teas are picked as buds and young leaves, by hand, over a short window, and each kilogram of dry tea takes several kilograms of fresh leaf. Named origins and early pickings carry premiums. Refined export grades such as gunpowder and Chunmee are priced far lower: green tea averaged USD 3,368.2 per tonne in China's 2025 export statistics.
