Organic vs conventional tea
Organic is an audited production and handling claim; it does not determine taste or replace residue testing. Verify that the relevant operators, products and handling steps are covered by current certification. EU imports use an electronic certificate of inspection in TRACES, while U.S. organic imports require a per-shipment electronic NOP Import Certificate. Conventional tea cannot be sold as organic, but it also needs to meet the destination's food-safety and residue limits.

| Organic programme | Conventional | |
|---|---|---|
| What the claim is | Chain of custody from certified production units | Residue compliance of the lot |
| Per-shipment document | EU e-COI in TRACES or U.S. NOP Import Certificate, as applicable | Residue test report against destination MRLs |
| Scheduling | Certified production units scheduled ahead of the flush | Sourced against the order |
| Storage | Segregated at every step | Standard |
| Markets that ask for it | EU, United States, Japan specialty | Morocco, Senegal, Ghana, Uzbekistan, Russia |
| Residue testing still needed | Yes | Yes |
| Cost driver | Certification, segregation, lower yield | Grade and residue compliance |
Versus
Does organic mean residue-free?
Organic does not mean residue-free. Organic certifies the process; residue testing measures the lot. Buyers into the EU and Japan normally require both, because a certificate cannot be tested at the border and a test report cannot prove chain of custody.
Why can organic not be sourced on demand?
Organic tea cannot be sourced on demand because the certificate follows the certified production unit and the season. A supplier who can offer organic at any volume on any lead time is describing a paper trail, not a programme. ODM Tea confirms organic availability, certifying body and certificate scope against current records in the quotation.
Frequently asked
Do Morocco or Senegal require organic tea?
No. They require residue compliance against their national limits. Organic is a specialty claim for the EU, the United States and Japan.
What is a transaction certificate?
The document name and workflow depend on the destination. EU organic imports use an electronic certificate of inspection in TRACES. U.S. organic imports require an electronic NOP Import Certificate for each shipment. Check the destination rule and certification scope rather than assuming one generic certificate covers both markets.
Does organic certification guarantee that tea tastes better?
No. Organic certification addresses a defined production and control system; it does not guarantee a preferred flavour, freshness or grade. Taste still depends on cultivar, harvest, processing and storage. Buyers should verify certification separately from sensory approval and should not use an organic logo as a substitute for cupping the contracted lot.
What should an importer check before making an organic claim?
Check the destination’s organic rules, the certificate holder, certifying body, current scope, covered product and site, validity, lot traceability and any transaction or import document required for that market. Names and addresses should match the contract chain. A supplier’s general certificate or logo alone may not support the claim on a specific shipment.
